Career Boot Camp for Georgia State University MSF Program
One week into the fall 2018 semester, MSF students from GSU’s Robinson College of Business attended the program’s inaugural one-day career boot camp to prepare them for the upcoming recruiting season. In addition to learning about finance career opportunities and competition from a former CFO, students were able to create and practice an elevator pitch, interview techniques, and resumes reviewed. After sitting for a brand new professional headshot, the new cohort was able to learn from the second-year students (graduation in December 2018) how they obtained their internships, networking skills, and landing their next job.
December 2018 graduate Priti Shaw was happy to join the student panel because, “I owe my internship to Robinson College of Business and I got it because of everything that I learnt in the MS Finance Program.”
From MSF student Nic Scarinzi: “The career boot camp was packed with knowledge and value! Both from the experienced staff and the second year students. It was full of practical guidance and actions that we need to take into our studying experience at GSU as well as our careers after that. I was impressed at the organization of the event which was given at the very beginning of my first semester and made me realize I chose the right program to be in.”
Regarding former CFO and the MSF program’s Executive in Residence, Alnoor Dinani said: “Through the career boot camp, I got to interact with Beatty D’Alessandro, who helped me understand what do companies expect from graduates and how we can better prepare ourselves for the opportunities ahead. The internship experiences, which the “second-year” students shared, directed us to be proactive and persistent along with focusing on our finance program to gain necessary business and technical skills. It was a well-structured camp from a graduate student standpoint.”
MSF Program Director Dr. Michael Yates stated, “The career boot camp provided a unique opportunity for our incoming MSFI cohort to learn about professional development and career paths in finance, not only from faculty, but also from a former CFO, a career coach and successful students from the previous cohort. Judging from student feedback, I think the event was a tremendous success.”
