The West Virginia University Masters in Finance program is a relatively new MSF that I found a couple of years ago and was recently checking out. Seems there have been a number of changes and I wanted to refresh the program for any of you interested in applying. I will reach out to the program and see if I can get a student review or something. The school is well known and the costs for the degree are pretty reasonable. I figure this combination will make this MSF interesting to a number of you.
Overview
The WVU program is 31 credit hours, full time, with a part time option available. The MSF program is a CFA Institute Partner School, something I highly respect and think is valuable for a graduate program in finance to have.
Students take 18 credit hours of core classes and then the remaining 13 credit hours can be chosen from a number of electives. The program has an Energy Emphasis that students can pursue if they are interested. This would be 12 credit hours (4 classes) of energy related classes. Considering the location of the Marcellus shale, I can see a lot of interest in this. Pretty unique option, especially for a non Texas MSF.
Admissions
Admissions are rolling, but the site mentions that March 1st is key to ensure full consideration. Applications include the standard resume, GMAT, transcripts, one letter of recommendation and statement of purpose. I did not find a class profile, but a minimum GPA of 2.75 from an accredited university is required. Not a daunting task.
Tuition is a little tricky for this program so I will lay out the per semester tuition costs. You would have to calculate this for yourself since it could take some people longer or shorter
- In State Tuition (Semester) – $4,410
- Out of State Tuition (Semester) – $12,420
Even assuming 3 semesters for an out of state student, this is pretty cheap. Something to consider for anyone on a budget.
