The Boston University Masters in Finance looks to be a new MSF being offered by the university. I was checking the recently on some of their other specialized masters programs and this one popped up. This is great news as BU is a well respected program that offered a number of great business focused graduate degrees. Nice to see another program launching in the city of Boston.
Program Overview
This is a STEM designated, full time, 33 credit hour program that is designed to be completed in 16 months with a 9 month option for qualified students. There are electives in this program so you can customize and focus your education to tailor your desired career path. In a signed of the times, students take FE555 AI for Financial Analysis which helps prepare you for AI in the workplace. The program starts with a data bootcamp and career focused class to help focus your career aspirations. The electives are pretty expansive with classes in ESG, behavioral finance, private equity and analytics.
Class Profile
I believe this is the inaugural class, but I could be wrong (I will check). With that said, below is the 2026 incoming class profile.
- Class Size – 56 students
- Male / Female – 60/40
- International – 77%
- Average GPA – 3.5
- 3.0 – 3.9 (80% range)
- Average GRE – 317
- 309 – 331 (80% range)
Students come from a variety of academic backgrounds, with finance being the major one (39%). Nearly 20% come from “other” which include a number of liberal arts majors. If you are not a business students you can still apply and find value with this MSF. I would imagine if you do not have a finance/business undergraduate degree the 16 month option would be the best for you. Plan accordingly.
Admissions
The application process is fairly standard and any academic background can apply. There are no recommendation letters needs, but you have to do 3 video essays. There is a GMAT/GRE waiver for those with work experience and/or a strong academic background.
Tuition (2026-2027) for the 16 month program is $82,968. I would imagine if you did the 9 month option it would be around $60K (this is an estimate). This brings it more in line with other comparable MSF programs. Please check though.
Below are the application deadlines. Still plenty of time to apply for the next round deadline in January.
| First date to Submit Application | Application Deadline |
|---|---|
| Fall 2026 | November 3rd, 2025 |
| January 12th, 2026 | |
| February 23rd, 2026 | |
| April 7th, 2026 |
Admission Events
There are a number of upcoming admissions events where you can learn more about this MSF as well as other specialized programs Boston University is offering. I always encourage attending one of these as it gives you a much better overview of the program and allows you to connect with the admissions team who will ultimately be making the decision on whether or not to admit you.

Excited to come across a new MSF program being offered, especially one from Boston University. I like the ability to tailor your classes and education, especially with the addition of AI classes. The two options are great and allow you to elongate your education if desired. The class stats look strong, but also flexible to allow a good variety of students. Pricing is in line with comparable programs as well. Will be nice to see placements as this degree matures. Boston is a phenomenal city to live and work in as well.
