It has been about 6 months since I updated everyone on the University of Utah Masters program and in that time there have been some positive changes to the program. The Utah MSF has really been working hard to develop their offering for students and from what I have seen, it really is paying off. They listen to what people are looking for and work hard to make sure their program offers what students want and need.
STEM Certified
Being a STEM Certified MSF program is the biggest thing going on right now and rightfully so. It allows international students additional time to work and stay in the United States post-graduation, without being sponsored. This is key as it is becoming harder and harder to find an employer who wants to bear the cost of getting a visa for their employees.
The program has beefed up their curriculum to both satisfy STEM requirements and also provide more skills to students in the program. A win win.
Ranking
I have to do a post on the 2017 Financial Times Rankings (way long overdue), but the University of Utah MSF program was ranked in the top 10 in the US for pre-experience Masters in Finance programs. Very good showing. The FT ranking is the most well know MSF ranking their is right now and the criteria for a US school to be included is rather difficult. Over the years, more and more programs have managed to be included and it is great to see Utah on that list.
Concurrent Degree Programs
For students looking to really get the most value out of their time out of work, the Utah program is offering dual degree and certificate programs for the MSF degree. Right now you can pursue both your MSF and the following degree options:
- MSF & Master of Science in Business Analytics
- MSF & Master of Science in Information Systems
- MSF & MBA
Students can also get certificates in Business Analytics and Information Systems in conjunction with their MSF degree.
I think this is a really great options and one that I have seen a few schools come out with. It is a great option for those who want to tailor their MSF education or provide themselves with career options.
All in all, I think these are some very good updates and improvements for the program. Being STEM certified is huge right now and the concurrent degree options is both unique and beneficial for anyone looking to maximize their educational value.
