Villanova University MSF Student Review #10

Just got another student review of the Villanova University MSF program. Gotta keep ’em coming! This is from a recent graduate and an international student. Very helpful if this is your profile as well. Enjoy!

1) Why did you choose an MSF in general? Why the Villanova MSF specifically?

Coming from a technical background in engineering with a few years of experience in the energy sector, I wanted to make a more focused shift into finance. For me, an MSF made more sense than an MBA because of how concentrated it is specifically on finance, I wanted depth, not breadth.

Villanova stood out for a few reasons. When I was doing my research, I reached out to several MSF alumni and was struck by how willing they were to make time for a conversation. That told me something real about the culture of the program before I even enrolled. Beyond the network, Villanova checked every box I was looking for: strong placements, a student-run investment fund, a mentorship program, and the opportunity to compete for a fellowship. The fellowship itself was a great experience, it gave me a window into some of the research happening at Nova that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Once I was on campus, Villanova felt like a smaller, tight-knit community, approachable faculty, close relationships with both grad and undergrad students, but with all the resources of a larger institution. The program does a great job of getting everyone to a common baseline through bootcamps and prep work before the fall semester, so when you dive into the deeper coursework you feel ready for it.

A standout academically was Portfolio Theory with Professor Perry, where you are assigned a sector and manage it throughout the course. I’ve always believed that applying what you learn is the best way to truly understand it, and this class delivered on that. It also made for great interview material.

2) How did the program help you with your job and career search?

My goal going in was to get a formal foundation in finance, and that is exactly what I came out with, which ultimately helped me land a role as a trading analyst at an energy company where I can apply those skills in a real professional setting.

Getting there was a combination of three things: Villanova’s resources, the alumni network, and my own hustle. The career fair, site visits, networking nights, and resume and interview prep resources from the school were all genuinely useful. Nova alumni were consistently generous with their time, those conversations helped me get clearer on what I wanted to do and opened opportunities I wouldn’t have found otherwise. That said, it’s important to go in with the right expectations, the program gives you the resources and the platform, but finding opportunities is largely on you. I was told the same thing before I enrolled, so I knew what to expect, and I think that mindset makes a real difference.  The opportunities are there, but you must go knock on those doors.

3) What advice would you give to anyone considering the Villanova MSF?

Two things. First, take advantage of everything available to you throughout the year. You never know who you might meet or what doors might open. The CFA Research Challenge, company visits to campus, CFA Philadelphia events, there is no shortage of ways to get involved, but some of them require you to seek them out. Second, and this is related: you get out what you put in. The program gives you the tools, the network, and the platform, what you do with them is up to you.

All in all, I had a fantastic experience at Villanova. I made great friends in my cohort, built a strong network I’ll carry throughout my career, and came away with knowledge I use every day. I would recommend it without hesitation.

I will keep working on more information on this program. Love the back to back reviews as well. Hope these help any of you considering this program.
