The Johns Hopkins Masters in Applied Economics is a relatively new program offered by the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. Classes are held online and in person, at night, at Johns Hopkins Washington, DC campus. The flexibility of this program is ideal for professionals outside of the DC area or students looking for a non-traditional classroom experience.
The program is 10 classes long, with the ability to customize their studies in seven different areas of study, including financial economics. Admissions are rolling, with classes beginning in the fall, spring or summer semesters, allowing prospective students the ability to start whenever is most convenient for them.
Admission requirements are pretty straight forward. Students need a graduating GPA of 3,0 or better, prior classwork in economics (macro and micro) as well as calculus. It appears that the GMAT or GRE is NOT required. Students can receive advance standing and opt out of up to two classes depending on prior graduate coursework. This can make the program even more convenient for students traveling to attend classes in DC.
I personally really like this program. I think the Johns Hopkins brand is very strong, the flexibility of the format of this degree allows people with obligations the ability to attend and earn the degree and the curriculum specialization will let you tailor your education to fit your interests and career goals. Tuition is approximately $40,000, which isn’t cheap, but isn’t the very expensive in comparison to other specialized master degrees (or PT MBA’s). If you have an interest in economics and are looking for a graduate degree from a well respected university, I would definitely take a look at this new program.
