Georgia State University MSF Update – October 2017

Georgia State University MSF Program

The Georgia State University MSF has had some recent updated that I wanted to touch on. It is always great when a program updates and provides additional information as it adds to the materials available for students when they are making their MSF decision. Georgia State has been pretty good about providing additional information at regular intervals and I hope this continues.

MSF Student Profile

Eliana Estrada Vera, Master of Science in Finance ’17, has always had a strong work ethic. In grade school her classmates waited for their parents to help them with their homework, but she would finish hers before her mom got home from work.

“I like to study and do the best I can,” she said.

Originally from Medellín, Colombia, Eliana earned a specialized masters degree in finance and capital markets from Universidad de Medellín. She had a job and a comfortable life in Colombia, but she forced herself out of her comfort zone and challenged herself to become a business leader in another country. She wanted to study in Atlanta because of its connection to business, culture, and international airport.

“I felt like my studies weren’t complete until I did something abroad,” she said.

Since enrolling in Robinson’s Master of Science in Finance program a year ago, Eliana has thrived. Classes at Robinson have expanded her knowledge in corporate finance, accounting, treasury, and analytics. Eliana applies what she learns in class through a number of activities. She is a participant in this year’s Panthers on Wall Street trip, works as a graduate research assistant, serves as treasurer for Atlanta’s chapter of Prospanica, and has an internship at Georgia Pacific. Her hard work and commitment has resulted in Georgia Pacific offering her a full time position.

Eliana said, “Dreams come true. You can achieve everything you want to achieve if you work hard and put love into what you are doing.”

Panthers on Wall Street

The Panthers on Wall Street program is a unique opportunity for select undergraduate and graduate students to travel to New York City for four days and meet with a number of financial executives. This past event, three Georgia State University MSF students were selected to attend this event.

A few past participating companies include:

  • Accenture
  • AIG
  • Bank of America
  • BDO Consulting
  • BlackRock
  • Capital One
  • Citibank
  • Keefe, Bruyette & Woods
  • PricewaterhouseCoopers

Students only need to cover travel costs. Over four days in September, students meet with and listen to lectures from wall street professionals. A great opportunity for students in Atlanta to get up north and gain exposure to professionals on the street.

Financial Leadership Symposium

GSU just finished their third Financial Leadership Symposium. This event focused on private equity with four panelists answering questions led by GSU’s Executive in Residence, Beatty D’Alessandro, EVP & CFO of Merchants Metals. Panelists included Matt Seston of Arcapita, Jason Squires and Colton Pate, both of Atlas Holdings, and Tommy D’Alessandro (no relation) of Roark Capital

You can read more about it here.

The fourth symposium is being planned for Spring 2018.

Financial Technology Labratory

The lab will focus on data analytics, finance, real estate, and risk management and insurance. It is also the first of its kind in the state of Georgia. Per the press release:

“Robinson’s lab will provide an applied, experiential environment in which students, faculty and corporate partners can experiment with the technologies transforming financial services, insurance and real estate. In initial projects, lab users will work with stock market, real estate, insurance contract and property sales data, as well as company financial documents such as SEC 10-Q, 10-K and 8-Q reports, to explore the development, deployment and implementation of financial applications on alternative platforms.”

All in all, a lot of great things going on at Georgia State. I will work to keep updating everyone as updated become available for this program. Until then, you can check out prior posts on the program below.
