University of Virginia Masters in Commerce Update – October 2022

The University of Virginia Masters in Commerce program has been one of the top specialized masters degrees available for as long as I can remember. The program has continually evolved, adding different tracks as well as a global option. UVA has done an amazing job with placements and developing these young graduates into dynamic professionals. Below is my most recent update on the program as I have notices a few new changes on the schools website. Enjoy!

2023 Class Profile

UVA provides a typical class profile, which is an average over the last three classes, that reflects the students who apply and are accepted into the program. This year it seems they are providing a bunch of detail for this specific class. You can read my previous post here that includes the last UVA profile for comparison purposes.

  • Class Size – 121 students
  • International – 24%
  • Female – 51%
  • GPA Range (Mid-80%) – 3.2-3.8
  • Non-UVA Undergraduate – 43%

Something to note – the class profile doesn’t include current year GMAT and GRE stats. On the admissions FAQ page the profile the following guidance:

  • GMAT Range (Mid-80%) – 580-720
  • GRE Range (Mid-80%) – 307-328

The program is very diverse, having 19 languages spoken and 41 different undergraduate institutions represented. There are now four tracks that students can choose from (used to be only three). Below are the percentages of the students that are in each.

  • Biotechnology – 6%
  • Business Analytics – 22%
  • Finance – 18%
  • Marketing & Management – 54%

Preliminary Class of 2021 Placement Information

I found the following regarding the class of 2021. The early numbers show an improvement over last years class which is very exciting.

As of February 2022, of those responding, 97% reported having offers. This is 3% higher than the final results last year. Keep in mind this is still early, but great to see the consistency.

  • Average Annual Salary: $71,932
  • Median Annual Salary: $72,500

Last year the average salary was $69,500. Great to see an increase in this as well. Also, keep in mind that this does not include any signing bonus or end of year bonus. These figures will largely depend on the industry you go into, but can substantially increase your total compensation.

Admissions Update

The first two application rounds have passed, with three more to go. Anyone interested in this amazing specialized masters should get their package ready to submit. The next rounds will be as follows:

  • January 5, 2022
    • Interview Completion Date – February 2, 2023
    • Decision Notification – March 10, 2023
  • March 5, 2023
    • Interview Completion Date – March 31, 2023
    • Decision Notification – May 5, 2023
  • May 5, 2023
    • Interview Completion Date – May 24, 2023
    • Decision Notification – June 9, 2023

After the final round, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Still plenty of time to apply if you are interested. I generally recommend applying as soon as you can as programs usually get more selective as time goes on. This isn’t always the case, but the longer you wait the more chance you have of having limited spots.

That is the update for now. This program continues to innovate and generate success for its students. Although this degree is only for non-business students, if you fit this category, the UVA MS in Commerce remains one of the top degree options you can choose.
