The University of Virginia Masters in Global Commerce program is pretty interesting as it allows students to earn two degrees and a certificate, from three universities (UVA, ESADE, and Sun Yat-Sen University). The program is ideal for those looking for a truly global experience and wanting to study around the globe.
I’ve been lucky enough to get a student review from one of the first classes. I’ve been told that these reviews are very helpful when it comes to trying to make a decision whether to apply to a program or not, so I am very happy to have received this. 1) Why an Specialized Masters in general? Why the UVA Masters in Global Commerce?
I chose a specialized master’s degree because I knew I wanted to change my job and also my career path. I knew getting a master’s would be the best path to do this and this program required little work experience as opposed to an MBA. The Dual Master’s in Global Commerce & Global Strategic Management at the University of Virginia, Lingnan (University) College, and ESADE Business School offered me an opportunity to go back to school, connect with companies all over the world, and travel to different parts of the globe all in one year. While MS degrees are less popular than an MBA, I believe it is programs like this that cater to a new generation’s demands of global thinking, that will quickly shift the tides to making specialized master’s degrees more popular.
2) Who would you recommend this program to?
I would recommend this program to anyone interested in working in international business. It is one thing to understand that business is done globally, however it is another thing entirely to have lived it for a one year master’s program. This opportunity not only connects three top business schools, but provides the chance to live and work with students from all over the globe. I knew I wanted to work in a large multinational company, and I believe this program gave me the qualifications desired by these global companies.
3) Pros/Cons (if any)
The pros include developing a network all throughout the world in different disciplines. I know I will always have a contact in many different business functions all over the globe. The only con is that 1 year does not seem like it was long enough to truly enjoy the experience!
4) Anything else you want to talk about (alumni, campus experience, recruiting, etc.)?
The alumni network and career services cannot be praised enough. I owe my current situation to the hard work and dedication to the Career Service teams. They were clearly invested in all of our success and it was shown on a group and individual basis.
