The University of Virginia Master in Commerce program is a one year graduate degree focusing on business education for non business undergrads. The program has been gaining popularity and getting better every year.
What were your goals with the MS Commerce program?
I was a student athlete previously and decided late in my college career that I wanted to really focus on my studies. Unfortunately, I was about to graduate and didn’t think this could be a reality. That is when I started looking at the Master in Commerce program at UVA. I quickly made the decision and was happily accepted. With this extra year of studies I made it my goal to throw myself into it completely and try for a career in NYC and in finance.
What did you gain from the program?
UVA has a top notch network and amazing business professors. The school sets up panels with financial professionals, mock interviews, networking events, etc. The classes are top notch and are very challenging.
The diversity of students really encourages different opinion and thoughts. Everyone takes the first semester together and then they break off into their specialty tracks for the second.
Who is this program ideally suited for?
The program is really suited for anyone without a business major for their undergrad. You see people who are driven and hungry, looking for a path and those who didn’t have the undergraduate opportunity to get into the position that they wanted.
Anything else to add?
Program is really improving and growing. People on the street recognize the masters and respect it. The professors who teach the program are always open to suggestions or criticisms. Placements are strong and every year more and more alumni are on the street.
The program ramps up fast and you need to be prepared to work hard and prep for interviews. UVA gives you all the tools and opportunities, but you need to be ready to go, day 1.
