3 Essay Secrets for Masters in Finance Applicants
Are you struggling to compose a compelling, convincing MiF statement of purpose? Do you have some ideas of what to write, but aren’t sure where to begin? Are you unsure as to what you should include in this important application essay?
Use the following essay tips to help you navigate the essay-writing process and draft an MiF statement of purpose that’s acceptance-worthy at your top choice finance program:
1. Know your goal or purpose. Before you sit down to write, you’re going to have to do some serious introspection. What do you plan on doing upon receiving your degree? You should be able to break down your goals into short-term and long-term goals, and describe each in detail. “I want to go into investment banking,” simply won’t cut it; but saying something like “I plan on working in risk management at a major investment bank and then moving to a hedge fund with expanded responsibilities.” Detailing the steps you’ll take to achieve that goal will not just reveal that you have a goal, but will show that you’ve actually thought about how you plan on pursuing it.
2. Show how your chosen program/degree will help. If you could achieve your purpose without a degree, then you probably wouldn’t spend the time and money to go back to school. Clearly you need this degree, but why? How will it help you achieve your goals? And why is Finance Program X the best program for you? Again, the adcom readers want to know that you have direction and that the MiF will help get you there.
3. Prove that you’ve analyzed your experience. Your experience in the past should both contribute to the achievement of your goals and provide you with the insight to realistically create your goals. In other words, make sure you’ve thought (and then written) about how your experiences have shaped and will continue to shape your future. If your goals are wholly unconnected to your experience, that may raise a red flag. Connect the dots from experience to purpose by either starting your essay with a vision for the future and then circling back to explain how your achievements today combined with the education provided by Top Choice Finance School will help you achieve that vision, or start with an achievement and then show how that has motivated you to pursue your goals, and how Program X meets your needs perfectly. If this goal represents a change in direction, discuss transferable skills that you will bring both to the study of finance and the pursuit of your dreams.
