Georgetown University Masters in Environmental and Sustainability Management

The Georgetown University Masters in Environmental and Sustainability Management is a brand new program being launched and another great offering that Georgetown has been rolling out over the years. They have been focusing on their specialized masters programs and this degree really captures the current focus on alternate energy and being environmentally conscious. Below is the overview of the curriculum as well as the admissions process. I’ll make sure to get more information on this program for all of you who are interest.

Overview

This is an 11-month, STEM-certified program, taught on campus by both the McDonough School of Business and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The combined degree is great for students interested in combining business education with sustainability and environmental studies.  Students complete 16 courses (30 credits), covering a range of science and business topics. You can find an outline of the program below:

Fall — 12 credits

    • Environment, Business, and Sustainability Management: Incorporating Ethics, Equity, and Justice (3 credits)
    • Environmental Science I: Earth Systems and Natural Processes (3 credits)

Module 1

    • Accounting for Sustainability Management (1.5 credits)
    • Climate Change Impact and Measurement (1.5 credits)

Module 2

    • Finance Accounting for Sustainability Management (1.5 credits)
    • The Economics of Climate Change (1.5 credits)

Spring — 12 credits

    • Environmental Science II: Human and Social Dimensions of Natural Resource Use (3 credits)

Module 3

    • Using Data and Analytics to Lead Change (1.5 credits)
    • Sustainable Operations, Supply Chains, and Marketing (1.5 credits)
    • Principles, Applications, and Impacts of Energy Technology (1.5 credits)

Module 4

    • Environmental Visualization and Storytelling with Data (1.5 credits)
    • The Business of Sustainable Energy (1.5 credits)
    • Capstone Course (1.5 credits)

Summer — 6 credits

Module 5

    • Firm Analysis and Strategy (1.5 credits)
    • ESG Finance and Impact Investing (1.5 credits)
    • Leading Teams for Performance and Impact (1.5 credits)
    • Capstone Course (1.5 credits)

Admissions

The program is currently recruiting for the inaugural class starting in August 2020. The application process is fairly standard. Resume, application, transcripts, recommendations, video essay and english proficiency for certain students. Optional components include diversity, personal background and contribution essays, along with standardized test scores (GMAT or GRE). Application deadlines are as follows:

  • Priority Scholarship Deadline –  January 15th
  • Regular Application Deadline – April 1st
  • Final Application Deadline – June 1st

Tuition fee for the 2022-2023 academic year is $68,340. This is based off of 30 required credits at a rate of $2,278 per credit. There are a limited number of scholarships available so if you are aiming for one of them make sure you apply by that first deadline.

I think the best thing about specialized masters is the ability to pick the right degree for your specific interests. Environmental and sustainability is a topic that is only going to get more important as time goes on.
