I just received the 2020 placement report for the University of Virginia Masters in Commerce program and it looks amazing. UVA has done a consistent and incredible job placing graduates and the program ranks as one of the best specialized masters programs in the US. The school has carved an incredible niche for themselves with their specific admissions criteria and the results speak for themselves. I’ll include highlights and my commentary as well as a link to the full report below. Enjoy!

Key Take Aways:
- Based on the 100 students reporting destinations, 94% reported employment within 6 months of graduation
- 68% of jobs were facilitated through McIntire and UVA
- Average annual base salary was $69,500
- 66% of international students found work outside of their home country and 59% found work in the United States after graduation
Here is more detail on salaries and bonus that the university provided. Very granular, something that I appreciate.
By Track | (%) | Avg Annual Base Salary | Average Annual Bonus | Average Signing Bonus | Total Average Comp. |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Business Analytics | 38% | $69,700 | $11,167 | $6,286 | $90,152 |
Finance | 35% | $71,500 | $23,000 | $8,625 | $106,375 |
Marketing & Management | 27% | $66,643 | $9,311 | $3,250 | $79,204 |
Total | 100% | $69,500 | $14,570 | $6,632 | $93,827 |
I love that the university broke this out between each track. The full chart includes a minimum and maximum base salary as well as relocation bonuses for each track. I unfortunately couldn’t figure out a way to fit this appropriately, but I will include a link to the full report at the end of this article. The program shows some good compensation, particularly in the finance track. I would imagine most of these placements are in investment banking, which has a pretty standard compensation model. The other tracks show much more variability, which is to be expected.
Overall, I love seeing approximately 70% of the jobs coming through the school and alumni base. The program has been around for a long time now and earlier graduates are now in a position to help current students. I know this is the case for my masters. I also liked the international statistics. Non-US students have always had a harder time with finding permanent placements and UVA is doing a really good job at helping these individuals.
As far as firm placements go, UVA provides a detailed listing of firms that have hired students over the last 4 years. The list is very large and includes every big bank, consulting firm and F500 company you can imagine. I will inquire and see if there is a list just for this year. Either way, the massive size and prominence of the firms should indicate the quality of recruiting and where you can find alumni working.
The full PDF document can be downloaded here. This will give you some additional detail. I will check in with the program about some questions I have, but in general, yet another stellar year for an amazing specialized masters program.
