University of Iowa Masters in Finance Program Update

The University of Iowa Masters in Finance Program is updated and now accepting applications for this upcoming school year. I posted about a month ago about this great new addition to the MSF universe, but at that time there wasn’t too much known about the program (you can read my first post here). Well the site is live and they have updated this with a lot of great material. As always, check back as I provide updated on the program as they become available.

STEM Confirmed

It is confirmed that the Tippie Master in Finance program will be STEM designated. This is a big draw for international students as it allows for additional time under the OPT rules (24 months vs. 12 months for non-STEM).

Duration – 16 months

This is something relatively uncommon in the MSF world, but will clearly set Iowa apart from the competition. The program required 42 credit hours (most MSF programs are in the 30’s). Because of the additional classes, most students will require 16 months to complete the degree. This should be an added bonus for international students who tend to seek out longer programs.

4th Semester

Students have the ability to take more classes and stay for a full two years. This additional semester will allow students to focus their studies more, perform research or pursue professional licensing. Another unique aspect of the program.

The program accepts the GRE and GMAT with no minimums. Iowa undergraduate students can apply for a GMAT waiver as well. GPA requirements are above a B average. Students without a business undergraduate degree are also encouraged to apply.

Applications are accepted according to the following schedule:

  • Priority deadline (all candidates): January 31, 2018
  • Final deadline for international candidates: March 15, 2018
  • Final deadline for domestic candidates: June 1, 2018

Tuition & Fees

This program is incredibly affordable for Iowa residents and is in line, pricing wise, for non-Iowa residents. Below is the tuition breakdown for 3 semesters.

Iowa resident Non-resident
Tuition and fees per semester $10,808.75 $16,514.50
Tuition and fees for three semesters $32,576.25 $51,557.25

There will also be graduate and teacher assistantships available to select admitted students.

All in all, a really comprehensive update. This is a rather unique MSF offering and I like that the school decided to go outside the box some. This program is great for international students, those looking for an almost MBA substitute, or those looking to really focus on a specific aspect of finance. I think the tuition makes this almost a no brainer for anyone tied to Iowa as well.

I look forward to learning more about this program as time goes on. Right now, I hope all of you find this update useful.
